When I was a kid I read DC Comics. I grew up when The Flash, Green Lantern, The Hawkman et al were brought back to life. I loved those stories.
My brother, Richard, read Marvel Comics. I looked at them but did not care for them.
Then, in Toronto, I met the late Captain George Henderson who ran first Viking Books on Queen West near University and then Memory Lane in Mirvish (then Markham) Street Village. George was the first in Toronto to see the value in old comic books and movie magazines and posters. My screenings began with George. George was in the hospital for a period. I ran his store for him. I did not do a very good job of it but I kept the door open and the rent paid. During that time I read complete runs of Marvel Comics. The brilliance of Stan Lee’s writing caught me. I realized my brother had been on to something I missed.
Stan Lee has left an enormous cultural legacy. I have all the Marvel movies on the shelf here.
I’ll be running them Sundays at 2pm.
