John McElwee‘s THE ART OF SELLING MOVIES is a terrific addition to the cinema bookshelf. It reproduces newspaper ads for motion pictures from the earliest days up to 1969 when television became the dominant medium for selling movies.

It is a great companion piece to McElwee’s earlier SHOWMEN,

John also hosts THE GREENBRIAR PICTURE SHOW blog of which I can’t get enough:    .

He knows his film history and is a delight to read. Unlike much of the commentary on the web, that on John’s site is a welcome and informed addition.
