In Hollywood, California in the winter of 1970 I met a man who by breaking the law of the land to help me caused me to take seriously what it appears far too many do not.

I tell that story in my self published book, THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED ROCHDALE COLLEGE.

Comic artist Chester Brown chose to tell that story for the cover of a special limited edition designed to help me raise funds during my legal battles.

We did not raise a lot of funds (damn little) but that does not matter.

Those who can do.

Those who won’t don’t.

I first met Chester in 1981 when he came to my screenings at THE PALMERSTON LIBRARY.

He became a regular and a friend.

For a time we lived side by side in two houses on Albany Street just up from where Jane Jacobs lived.

Chester, at that time, had not been published. He got a lot of pink slips from publishers who today are eager to publish anything by him.

That art was turned into a poster for used bikes that are sold by a man who runs a street poster business as well.

For a brief time he lived in my house. He ate at my table.

He started his street poster business in 2000. From the start he began posting flyers designed to bring harm to their subjects.

He says he is a Christian.

Well, he is a Jehovah’s Witness which is not the same thing.

I don’t say I am a Christian mainly because neither Jesus nor those who walked with him called themselves Christians.

The word was first used as an insult. Today it has become an insult to Christ.

St. Paul wrote that of all gits the gift we most should seek is understanding.

That is the gift I asked for.

Understanding, when it comes, comes after the fact.

In the moment, as Paul wrote, we see as through a glass darkly.

It is no easy task to pray for someone determined to do us as much harm as they can.

But then neither was the road to Golgotha an easy task.

That road is documented on the Turin Shroud.

Every detail is there from the sweating of blood in the garden of Gethsemane to the final moments when the body of Jesus lay face down on the earth after his death.

Don’t take my word for it.

Read what forensic scientist Robert Bucklin wrote:

“For over 50 years as a Forensic Pathologist, I have been actively involved with the investigation of deaths which come under the jurisdiction of a coroner of Medical Examiner. During that time, I have personally examined over 25,000 bodies by autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

“For most of that same period of time, I have had an abiding interest in the study of the Shroud of Turin from a medical view point. It seemed to be a natural decision for me to integrate my two interests and to try to record the results of what would have been done if the human body image on the Shroud of Turin were to be examined by a modern day Medical Examiner’s office.”

Join me Sunday at 2pm, The CineForum, 463 Bathurst, Toronto. 416-603-6643. Donation $20.

Pray for those who do you wrong.

This is the only way to make this world right.

While you are here pick up a copy of THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED ROCHDALE and my highly acclaimed free verse re-telling of THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH.

WARNING: I did not write these for children.–Reg Hartt

It is said David buried both the skull of Adam and the skull of Goliath at Calvary (also called Golgotha) which means “the hill of the skull.” That makes perfect sense to me if not to you.

Chester Brown’s art for my book THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED ROCHDALE has been turned into an ad for used bikes sold by a man who for two decades has been doing his best to bring the worst down upon myself and others. He says he is a a Christian. Jesus taught, “Many shall say falsely they are with me. You will know them by their works.” Yes, we shall. Nonetheless, we are to pray for those whop do evil to us. We are to turn the other cheek. We are to return evil with good. Not only that, we are to give thanks in all things both the good and the bad (1 Thessalonian 5:18).

Only one man in Toronto posts flyers meant to incite violence upon their subjects.
