I ran the films of W. C. Fields at Rochdale College in Toronto so often they are burned in my brain.

The audience was there for Fields. They were blind and deaf to the other artists on the screen.

When I player INTERNATIONAL HOUSE with Fields if I told the audience Cab Calloway was singing about reefer they got it. If I didn’t,. they didn’t.

Here he is:

There is an epic movie in the Rochdale story. In fact, there are three of them. Talk with me.–Reg Hartt

We rarely value where we are. I had to go to Hollywood to learn how valuable Rochdale was.

Many say nothing of value came out of Rochdale College. Many are wrong. A great deal of value came out of Rochdale.

You won’t find a better endorsement of an author’s work than one from the author of THE DEATH AND LIFE OF GREAT AMERICAN CITIES. Her last book, DARK AGE AHEAD, was published to cries of, “She’s wrong.” That was in 2004. In 2023 we know she saw what few did. We are living in a dark age.

In ROCHDALE–THE RUNAWAY COLLEGE David Sharpe, the author, makes it clear to his readers he never entered Rochdale ( ).

Too bad.

He might have learned something.

The book is fine for dilettantes (a person who cultivates an area of interest, such as the arts, without real commitment or knowledge).

Meaning that it is useless.

Reg Hartt’s CineForum at 463 Bathurst Street in Toronto, Canada, is everything Jane Jacobs wrote about in THE DEATH AND LIFE OF GREAT AMERICAN CITIES. —Laura Lind.

What makes Reg Hartt’s CineForum everything Jane Jacobs wrote about is the silence of Mayor Olivia Chow while forces in Toronto work to destroy it.

“Reg Hartt CineForum  is a living, breathing work of art.”—Ed Keenan

“Reg Hartt’s CineForum is The Omphalos.” —UofT Varsity.

“I honestly believe Reg Hartt is the greatest teacher I know for only he teaches the evil of teaching. Well, not only he. For confirmation of everything he has been saying all along read David Mamet’s book TRUE AND FALSE.”—Emo Philips

“Reg Hartt has had an amazing impact given the size of the venue and the esoteric nature of the programming. He’s had an incredible impact on the city. No one else is doing it. No one else has ever done it.”–Rob Salem.

An art form requires genius. People of genius are always troublemakers, meaning they start from scratch, demolish accepted norms and rebuild a new world. The problem with cinema today is the dearth of troublemakers. There’s not a rabble-rouser in sight. There was still one, but he went beyond troublemaker to court jester. He clobbered the status quo. That’s Godard. We’re fresh out of ‘bad students.’ You’ll find students masquerading as bad ones, but you won’t find the real article, because a genuine bad student upends everything. –Henri Langlois

“Film students should stay as far away from film schools and film teachers as possible. The only school for the cinema is the cinema. The best cinema is the Paris Cinematheque. The best teacher is its founder Henri Langlois.”—Bernardo Bertolucci

“The best part of what Reg Hartt offers is what he has to say.”—Jane Jacobs.

The ROCHDALE idea lives at Reg Hartt’s CineForum.

It is having great success.
