I had in John Casey, my grade 12 English teacher at Sir James Dunn C. & V. S. in Sault Ste, Marie, Ontario one of the few truly remarkable teachers I met in the school system.

Altogether I met six extraordinary men and women.

One day he told us that he had taken all the books he wanted his children to read, put them in a book case with glass doors, locked the doors and hid the keys.

He told his children that if he caught them reading those books he would beat them. Of course, they read every one.

I was 18. When he ended his story I said to myself, “This is the only way the story of the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden makes any sense.” It is.

Rebellion is not a sin. It is a sign of intelligence and of having a backbone.–Reg Hartt
