THE MAZE (1953) appears to be out of print on Kino Lorber’s site though copies of it are still to be had on Amazon at reasonable prices.

I had bought new 3D Glasses some of which work wonderfully, some of which don’t work at all. Fortunately I was able to return to Amazon the ones that don’t work.

I tested them out by watching THE MAZE.

Designed and directed by the great William Cameron Menzies (  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Cameron_Menzies   ,   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muXL9YO9HOI , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maze_(1953_film)      )  THE MAZE is a film I had wanted to see in 3D for decades. That was impossible until Martin Scorsese stepped up to the plate. He helped THE 3D FILM ARCHIVE bring this picture to me in a 3D Blu-ray I appreciate more each time I see it.

Based on a story by Maurice Sandoz (with wonderful illustrations by Salvador Dali) THE MAZE is, as the ads shout, “A-mazing.”

Movies like this work only when we suspend belief.

I once kicked a man out of DRACULA (1931) for laughing every time Bela Lugosi appeared on the screen.

When I asked him why he said, “Everyone knows vampires do not exist.”

I told, “We all know that but for the moment we are pretending they do.”

He muttered something about us all being fools. As it was no point arguing I gave him the boot.

You should do the same when reading reviews of this film by “intelligent” critics and film scholars

No one can stand on the quicksand of scholarship.

I’m going to program THE MAZE in the fall.

The only way to see this picture is as it is meant to be seen which is in 3D.

Wikipedia says THE MAZE is one of two 3D pictures designed and directed by William Cameron Menzies. That is news to me.

If there is another one I can’t find it.

A special tip of the hat to Kino Lorber a small company doing what big companies (Warner Archive and Sony) say they can’t afford to do which, namely, is restore to 3D Blu-ray the wonderful 1950s films they are sitting on.

Interest in 3D movies in 2D is dead flat. Interest in them in 3D, as  3D Film Archive keeps showing is alive and thriving.
