Liz Worth’s TREAT ME LIKE DIRT An Oral History of Punk In Toronto And Beyond does not treat its subject like dirt.
It is not only well worth reading, it is essential to understanding the scene it speaks of.
Speaks of is the word because this book consists of snippets of people speaking without thinking which is to the good because we get everything.
My main interest in the book is Steven Leckie whose 2015 Concert at The Phoenix in Toronto I filmed in 3D with a hand held SONY HDR TD1o camera which allowed me to be invisible on the floor.
People have a lot to say in this book about Leckie.
While acknowledging his brilliance most describe him as someone less than charming to know.
One person states that as a singer Leckie wasn’t.
Actually he was.
Steven Leckie was as good as Frank Sinatra.
I ran the 1968 ELVIS COMEBACK SPECIAL Saturday, Aug. 16 withmy VILETONES film.
Leckie loved Elvis.
For myself Leckie was the better artist.
Presley, in the special, has a manufactured tone.
Leckie was not manufactured by anyone.
Robert Allen, my sister’s husband was the first drummer of THE FORGOTTEN REBELS.
He asked me to show him the film He was impressed.
I was impressed by this book. If you do not have it, get it.
Unlike many of his peers Steven Leckie was focused wholly on his art.
He was not distracted by drugs. No heroin for him.
Smart man.
He remains a hero.–Reg Hartt
