Alexandre Dumas wrote that a man who sees himself defeated before he has begun to fight has enlisted in the ranks of his enemy.

Miyamoto Musashi, Japan’s greatest Samurai and author of THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS asked the secret of his success replied, “I see myself as one already dead.”

I understand what he means.

I see myself as one already dead.

I attempted through my work in Toronto with film to do what Henri Langlois did at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris.

First and foremost my CineForum has been and continues to be about the people who come here.

This all started in 1968, first at The Public Enemy on Yonge at Yorkville, then at Rochdale College followed by a variety of locations until 1992 when my home at 463 Bathurst became The CineForum.

I hit 74 this year. It’s time to think of finding a new home for the treasures here as anyway we look at it I’m on gravy time.

This is not a decision I regret having to make. It is an exciting decision I am happy to make.

My hope is to see everything moved to Montreal and to my friends in that city.

THE I CHING, which I have been studying since 1968, stated I was not to agree to any deals.

I left it to Providence.

After I meditated on all that had happened I realized I was once again going to have to walk the walk I talk.

THE I CHING teaches that before a man’s name can become great it must first be destroyed.

I accept this as true.

Hopefully a way can be found to surmount this moment, take care of my cats and keep the doors of The CineForum open.

If not, it has been wonderful to meet all of you. Good things have been done here.

All things no matter how good come to an end.

I am and always have been trusting in Providence.

Folks who do that tend to wind up beheaded (St. Paul) burned at the stake (Joan of Arc) crucified (Jesus), crucified upside down (Peter who said, “I don’t deserve to be crucified right side up.”) hung (way too many Black men), stoned and more.

I’m in good company.

My life has been a wonderful Mandela which now being complete is about to be destroyed.

That is what we are supposed to do with Mandelas.

They should not even be photographed.

God bless.-Reg Hartt
