Plot for a 2024 cartoon starring the 1928 version of Mickey Mouse. Mickey takes Minnie to a nude beach. On the beach we see Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Koko the Clown, Felix the Cat with their girl friends. The boys are naked. The girls are in bra and panties. Among them is William Haines who was a top star in 1928. Minnie has the hots for him. He morphs into Kevin Spacey. Mickey strips down. Minnie sees more of Mickey than she has ever seen (we don’t). She says, “Oh, Mickey!” she strips down to bra and panties. Mickey is frustrated. He wanted more. Seeing he is not going to get it he walks out into the lake followed by the William Haines/Kevin Spacey Mouse. Minnie say’s, “Isn’t he wonderful!” Mickey goes way out. The William Haines/Kevin Spacey mouse dives under the water. Close up of Mickey. At first he’s surprised. Then he smiles. He winks at the audience. THE END. Disney this ain’t. special titled: Dedicated to Dan O’Neil and The Air Pirates.
You must be between 18 and 27 (Disney and Ub Iwerks were 18 when they started, 27 when Mickey was create), have no formal training in art and/or animation. Walt went to the library. He took out Edwin George Lutz’s ANIMATED CARTOONS; how they are made, their origin and development. https://archive.org/details/cu31924075701304 . Emo Philips sent me the attached post card. As a result I read David Mamet’s books TRUE AND FALSE and BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA. Mamet writes, “Invent nothing. Deny nothing. Stand up. Speak up. Stay out of school.” It must be 7 minutes long. I will give you a story unlike anything Disney or anyone else would do (Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, Friz Freleng, Chuck Jones said story is the hardest part so that takes care of the hardest part. Oysters do not choose the grain of sand they turn into pearls). The finished work must be in 3D. If you see something in your work people say you shouldn’t do, keep it. That part is you. You’re not making this for a panel of “experts”. You’re not making it for your family and/or friends. You’re making it for me. Cut costs. Don’t spend $5 when five cents will do. Everyone thought Disney was through. They knew he had no money. 1928 Mickey is the star. The music must be variations on TURKEY IN THE STRAW (think of THE PINK PANTHER). Tex Avery on the phone with me said, “Never have more than 3 characters on screen at once unless it’s a crowd scene.” You can use other pre-1928 characters–Oswald, Koko the Clown, Felix the Cat). Don’t put anything on the screen not relevant to the story. If all that is needed is a squiggle, use a squiggle. Do the storyboards. Show them to me. Do pencils. Show them to me. Disney looked at all this stuff. Often he’d take ideas his guys rejected which he found crumpled in the trash. He either said, “That’s great,” or “That’s not what I expected.” What he expected he never described. I will do the same. Why am I doing this? Well, one reason is that somewhere there is a young person as talented as Ub Iwerks. I’d like to find them. I must have the completed film by Dec. 31, 2024. I will announce my decision December 31st, 2025. The word “mickey” can mean a drug dropped in a drink. It also means as in to have “mickey” to be brilliant, exceptional, radiant, vibrant. We have add some awful years. I’d like to see some mickey put into 2024. “Mickey Mouse” can also mean being poorly made which I do not understand as there was nothing Mickey Mouse about Mickey, Disney or Iwerks. Buster Keaton said, “All you need to make a movie is a beginning and an ending. The middle takes care of itself.” Look at his silent films. The ending is a close up of Mickey. He smiles. He winks at the audience. Pre-1930 Mickey was a rascal. Post 1930 Mickey was a boy scout. I want the rascal.
This must be in 3D. Disney embraced the new technology. He led the way. I do too.
I want this raw and crude. This is not entertainment. It is not product. It is art.
We’re going where no one has gone before.–Reg Hartt
