I first saw Chrystia Freeland’s move from Finance as a betrayal. I saw Trudeau’s efforts to get Carney as a lack of faith in Freeland. Then I realized it was actually a vote of extreme confidence in her abilities. The biggest threat to Canada is coming from our neighbour. Trump joked about Canada becoming the 51st state. Nonetheless, what started as a laugh is becoming very serious. The trio of Trudeau, Freeland and Carney I now see as an extremely effective and well thought out manoeuvre. Unfortunately because Freeland resigned in the fashion she chose we are now at more peril than we have ever been. As Putin is the The Ukraine Trump is to Canada. Freeland needs to make things right with Trudeau. As Linda McQuaig wrote in THE STAR: “The media is clearly over the moon about the Trudeau-Freeland rupture, and the prospect that her resignation — citing her disapproval of his free-spending ways — provides new ammunition for attacking Liberal deficits. It’s true that Trudeau’s $250 Christmas giveaway scheme is irresponsible and in line with the kind of fiscal gimmickry one associates with Ontario Premier Doug Ford. But, overall, the Trudeau government has been fairly fiscally responsible, with an admirable toughness in not simply acquiescing every time Bay Street demands fresh cuts to programs designed to help working people. So, it’s not surprising that prominent business and media commentators are giddy that Freeland has accused her longtime mentor of fiscal recklessness, thereby delivering him the withering death blow that, despite their considerable efforts, they hadn’t yet managed to deliver themselves.”
